Database Saving

Say i wanted to upgrade my server.. but not loose my players characters/account/equipment.. how would i go about saving it. Might there be a guide somone has ?.

all you need to do is extract the db out of the old one and import them in to the new one

yes how ever.. id like to know how to do this correctly before i fuck it over hehe ;P
