The story about the Mayan calendar is both correct and incorrect.

The Mayan calender work in sets of 19 in the format "0.0.0.0". The calender goes up 1 digit every day (so day 1 is 0.0.0.1, day 5 is 0.0.0.5 and day 20 is 0.0.1.0). Because of the method they count the calender, obviously it's got to stop at some point as it can only go to "19.19.19.19" and this date happened to stop on 21st December 2012. Because of this, and the fact they only found this calender by the Mayan's, it was presumed this had to be of some significance and, obviously, people went straight for the worst idea they could think of. This then quickly spread and from there a lot of stories have been created about what will happen.

Recently, however, a second Mayan calender has been found. This one starts back at 0.0.0.0 and is a continuation from the first calender. Because the story about the end of the world has been in everyone's mind for so long, when the second calender got discovered it didn't make much news for everyone.
